A vertical section of a chalk quarry was covered with a layer of waterlogged earth. This intervention reburies the chalk massif, once stripped of soil by industrial extraction, back into the ground, introducing the potential for vegetation to take root. How will this “vertical” transform over the seasons? Will rains wash it away, or will erosion destroy it? There are no definite predictions. However, the creation of a distinct geometric form amidst the lush natural landscape once again highlights the contrast of shapes, drawing attention to and emphasizing the environment we inhabit.

This work invites reflection on the interaction between human interventions and natural processes. The deliberate act of covering the exposed chalk speaks to themes of restoration and impermanence, reminding us of nature’s capacity to reclaim and reshape what was once disrupted. The piece exists as both a question and an experiment, challenging the viewer to consider the dynamic balance between creation, destruction, and renewal.
